Tornado Declared Federal Disaster

Saturday, February 24th, 2007 by Karen

Apricot Demo after Dark

Matt McBride sends this news

A Presidential Disaster Declaration has been issued for Jefferson, Orleans, and St. Martin Parishes to help with the aftermath of the February 12-13 tornadoes. This Declaration was issued with a considerable amount of speed compared to comparable recent events elsewhere in the U.S.

The most important thing for affected residents and business owners to do now is to register with FEMA at the number with which we are all familiar: (800) 621-FEMA (3362). The number’s available 8 AM to 6 PM CST Monday through Saturday. The disaster number to give the FEMA rep on the phone is 1685.

One other bit of information is the name of the Federal Coordinating Officer (or “FCO”) for this disaster. His name is Lee Champagne, and according to the FEMA staff directory, his phone number is (312) 408-5354. I think he’s the go-to guy if problems arise down the line. Here’s the FCO job description according to the Federal regulations.

Tornado Update

Sunday, February 18th, 2007 by Karen

I recieved this letter from Matt McBride of Broadmoor

Dear New Orleanians,

  • While the media attention for the tornadoes has now faded under a pile of Mardi Gras beads, the needs of the victims have not.

The Red Cross is currently accepting monetary donations that will be used for the Emergency Disaster Relief Cards that are at present being distributed to individuals affected by this disaster.

If you or anyone in your neighborhood would like to donate, please go to the New Orleans Red Cross’ website at http://www.arcno. org or give their office a call at (504) 620-3105 and state that you are wishing to contribute/donate to the Tornado Assistance Fund.

IMPORTANT: Please note that all donations to the Tornado Assistance Fund will stay local and will only be used for this particular disaster.

Matt McBride

Since the tornado it has been very cold, I know some folks are having trouble with utilities, and some have watched their homes demolished. There are many folks who are starting all over AGAIN

8/29 Commission

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007 by Nola J

Every single person who lives in South Louisiana…
Every single person who lives behind a levee any where in the US (say Sacramento or Iowa)..
Every single person who cares about how the Federal Government spends their tax dollars..
Should sign the Levees.Org Petition to create a 8/29 commission to investigate the failure of the levee system in New Orleans.

It matters, not because we want to throw stones or blame someone, but because it could happen again and not just in New Orleans. Enough people have died. Enough people have lost their jobs and homes and communities. We would not wish what we deal with everyday on anyone else.

Presentation

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2006 by Karen

Dear New Orleanians,

My name is Matt McBride. I received four feet of water in my house and my neighborhood of Broadmoor got eight in Katrina. I’ve been working in drainage advocacy for the past six months, acting as a watchdog on the Corps drainage projects around New Orleans in the wake of the storm.

This Thursday, August 24th, I will be giving a presentation detailing all of the shortcomings of the Corps efforts relating to repairs and rehabilitation of New Orleans’ drainage system since Katrina. Currently, the Corps’ significant lack of effort has left the city with over half its drainage capacity as unreliable and prone to failure during even small rainstorms, never mind tropical storms and hurricanes.

The presentation will be in at the Astor Crowne Plaza Hotel at the corner of Canal St. and Bourbon St. It will begin at 12 noon in the Iberville Room. I hope to see you there.

I hope to see you there!

Rally at the Non Levee

Todays rally at the 17th Street Canal. Airline and Monticello.

Carolyn Bell from Palm Air

This is a statement made by Carolyn Bell from Palm Air

On behalf of our Neighbors from Palm Air, HollyGrove, North Carrollton,
Gert Town,Broadmoor,Lakeview, Gentilly and Other Neighborhoods on the New Orleans side
of the 17th Street Canal,we want answers as to why our Neighbors on the Jefferson/Metairie side of the 17TH Street Canal are arming themselves with an elevated facade and the Orleans side is left defensless

Another issue which is puzzling is that the entire Canal is in Metairie, yet we are
told that it is Orleans Parish who is responsible for that side.
When you look at this elevation and pipes pointing towards your Neighborhood it is
quite alarming.

Peak Hurricane Season is approaching along with the Anniversary of Katrina, We feel
this is a time when all Parishes should be working together for an equitable solution
We cannot afford to be selfish, untrusting and unNeighborlyabout this problem
Each problem should be everyones problem.

We cannot afford to be hemmed into a City,to reexperience Death and destruction of
a Beautiful City such as New Orleans and other areas affected due to ineffective leadership and a Corp of Engineers which has been set up like an untouchable elusive
Ghost in the wind with Powers which have a negative impact on the Citizens, The City and other surrounding Parishes.

This City,Our Parishes,Baton Rouge and Washington D.C. have to devise a way to balance
equally the Distribution of Potential Innudation of water throughout our City

UPDATE FROM COUNCILWOMAN MIDURAS OFFICE

Monticello St. Drainage Canal –

The Councilmember has announced an outdoor townhall in Hollygrove with the Army Corps of Engineers and the Sewage & Water Board to address the communitys safety concerns over the Monticello St. drainage canal.

Your Councilmember will bring the Sewage & Water Board, Army Corps of Engineers and hopefully someone from Jefferson Parish to the community to get feedback directly from the nearby residents that will enable them to move forward on a plan with input from the neighborhood.

The townhall will occur Saturday, August 12th from 5-6:30pm at Mamie Conrad Playground in Hollygrove. The park is located at the corner of Hamilton and Olive St.
